About This Location
Mount Olympus, known locally as Chionistra, is the highest point in Cyprus at 1,952 metres and the summit of the Troodos range. On a clear day the view runs across most of the island and out to the sea on both coasts, and in winter it holds the only skiable snow in Cyprus, with runs operating on the northern slopes.
The summit itself is occupied by a radar installation and is not open, but the mountain is ringed by walking trails that are among the best in the country. The Artemis trail circles the peak at around 1,850 metres through black pine and juniper, some of it very old, and the Atalante trail runs lower down the slope. The air at this altitude is thin and cool even in August, which is why the mountain villages below became summer retreats in the first place.
Troodos Square, a short drive below the summit, is the practical base with parking, cafes, the visitor centre and the trailheads. From there the peak is a straightforward drive or a longer walk, and the whole area is within the Troodos national forest park.
