    About Troodos Mountain

The Troodos Mountains form the largest mountain range in Cyprus and dominate the centre of the island. The area is known for its cooler temperatures, pine forests, rivers, waterfalls, and high-altitude villages. It provides a strong contrast to the coastal regions, especially in summer, and attracts visitors year-round for nature, culture, and outdoor activities.

What makes the Troodos Mountains unique is how they were formed. The range is the exposed remains of an ancient underwater volcano that rose from the floor of the Tethys Ocean millions of years ago. As tectonic plates pushed upward, layers that originally formed deep beneath the sea were lifted above the surface. Because of this process, the mountain range is considered geologically “upside down,” with rocks from the Earth’s mantle found above layers that would normally sit closer to the surface.

Today, this rare geological structure makes Troodos one of the most studied mountain ranges in the world. Visitors can see unusual rock formations, mineral-rich soils, and landscapes shaped by erosion and elevation. Alongside its natural features, the area includes traditional villages, wine routes, and UNESCO-listed Byzantine churches, creating a destination where geology, history, and daily life exist side by side.
