Historically, during the medieval period, these fountains were vital to the daily lives of villagers. They supplied fresh water for homes, gardens, and animals, and remarkably, even during severe droughts, the springs never ran dry. This reliability made them essential not only for survival but also as social gathering spots, where locals met, shared stories, and worked together.
Along the trail, visitors encounter each fountain, each with its own story:
Athkies Fountain: the starting point of the trail, named after the willows (athkies) that grow around it.
Arkatzin Fountain: once used to irrigate nearby gardens, located beside the Byzantine Monastery of Catholic Holy Mary.
Pano Vrisi Fountain: where women of the village traditionally gathered to wash clothes and sheets.
Kostena Fountain: originally an important water source, it was converted into a water tank in the early 1970s.
Koupas Fountain: mainly used for watering animals, reflecting the agricultural way of life.
Poullin Fountain: an impressive structure with two arches that marks the end of the route.
As you walk between the fountains, the trail leads through vineyards, orchards, and olive groves, with plenty of shaded spots for rest. In spring, wildflowers brighten the route, while autumn offers views of harvest time in Arsos. The Six Fountains Trail is both a peaceful nature walk and a living open-air museum, where history and daily village life meet.
