    About This Location

    Paphos Castle stands proudly at the western end of Paphos Harbour, a sturdy sentinel overlooking the sea and town. Its origins go back to Byzantine times when it was built to protect the harbour. Over centuries the castle was rebuilt and modified: by the Lusignans, dismantled by the Venetians, and then restored by the Ottomans in 1592. The building you see today reflects that 16th-century Ottoman restoration, with Venetian additions and earlier Frankish structures still discernible in its design. Its thick limestone walls, narrow windows, battlements, and internal courtyard speak of a history of defence, trade, salt storage, and incarceration.

    The castle is more than just a ruin: it is very much alive in the city’s cultural life. It serves as a backdrop for open-air concerts, opera performances during the Aphrodite Festival, and other events in the harbour area. Visitors arrive to enjoy the mix of history, views of the sea, harbour bustle, and architectural interest. From the ramparts one can see fishing boats, pleasure crafts, the promenade, and the changing colours of sea and sky at sunrise or sunset. It is compact enough that you can see much of it in under an hour, yet rich enough in character to leave you thinking about its long past.
