Lefkara

Perched on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, Lefkara is one of Cyprus’ most celebrated villages, famous worldwide for its intricate embroidery and delicate silverwork. Divided into Pano Lefkara (Upper Lefkara) and Kato Lefkara (Lower Lefkara), the village is a living museum of tradition, where every alleyway whispers stories of artistry, history, and resilience.

The village’s fame rests largely on its lace-making tradition, Lefkaritika, a craft so unique that it has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage. Legend has it that Leonardo da Vinci himself visited Lefkara in 1481 and purchased a lace cloth to adorn the altar of Milan Cathedral. Today, visitors can still see women sitting outside their homes, carefully embroidering the complex geometric designs that have made the village world-renowned.

Lefkara is also celebrated for its silver filigree work, where skilled craftsmen create delicate jewelry and ornaments using fine threads of silver. The artistry can be admired in local workshops and shops scattered around the village, many of which have been family-run for generations.

Beyond its crafts, Lefkara is a charming place to explore on foot. Its narrow cobbled streets are lined with traditional stone houses, decorated with wooden balconies and colorful shutters. The village also boasts several cultural attractions, such as the Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmithing, which preserves the history of these crafts, and the Church of the Holy Cross, dating back to the 14th century.

For food lovers, Lefkara offers authentic tavernas serving Cypriot delicacies, often made with locally grown ingredients. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys, makes it a favorite destination for day trips and cultural tours. Every August, the Lefkara Festival brings the village alive with music, dancing, exhibitions, and plenty of lace and silver on display.
