Lazanias

Lazanias is a small, picturesque village located in the Nicosia District, about 30 kilometers south of the capital. Set on the slopes of the Machairas Mountains, the village offers visitors a serene escape from city life, surrounded by pine-covered hills and traditional stone-built homes that reflect authentic Cypriot rural architecture.

The village’s history dates back to the Byzantine period, when it was part of the land belonging to the nearby Machairas Monastery. In fact, the village name is said to derive from the word “Lazanias,” a title given to the monks who once managed the monastery’s agricultural estates. Lazanias is also known for its connection to Grigoris Afxentiou, one of Cyprus’s national heroes and a key figure in the EOKA struggle for independence during the 1950s.
